Sounds of the New Year

How did you ring in the new year? Or maybe a better question is how did your new year sound?

Mine was full of music…and a little tap dancing.

My husband John and I had the privilege of serving as emcees at “The Sounds of Midnight” fundraising event for the Habersham Community Theater. This small theater located in the heart of downtown Clarkesville, Georgia is a delightful venue that draws patrons from around North Georgia.

The evening started with a top notch jazz trio providing just the right instrumental music to set a chill, relaxing vibe for the evening. While waiting for the show to begin, attendees sipped champagne, sampled gourmet desserts and snapped quite a few photos of their glittery gowns and happy new year smiles. Once the main production began, our job was to count down a century of musical theater and share the history behind the music.

Seasoned performers wowed the crowd with show-stopping numbers like “If I Were A Rich Man” from Fiddler on the Roof, “Helpless” from Hamilton, and “One Day More” from Les Miserables. One of my favorite performances was Amber Miller tap dancing to “Anything Goes”. I admit that I’m always mesmerized by tap dancing. That clicky sound just makes me look and smile!

The audience even joined in on some of the more familiar tunes like “Edelweiss” and “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning”. Isn’t it amazing how songs, even ones you haven’t heard for a long time, come flooding back to your memory and transport you to a different time and place? Oh, what a beautiful way to bring the mind and heart together.

I’m grateful to have been a part of this special event. Kudos to the director, Lisa Smith, and to all the performers who gave the gift of music. Happy new year, and may your 2023 be filled with beautiful sounds.
